Session Start Times

The best light to shoot portraits in is soft light, particularly on the beach. We always plan for a sunny day with a start time around an hour and a half before sunset. In the late sprint and summer months sessions start between 7pm and 7:30. Please do not expect us to show up like soldiers and work like robots. Photography is a very personal experience. In order for us to capture you in a pleasent way everyone involved will need to be relaxed. We give a start time of 7 to 7:30 to compensate for traffic delays or really sunny days. The sun sets giving us 15 to 20 minutes of beautiful soft light after it has passed the horrizon line called evening glow. If we shoot all the way until the end of evening glow the end time is usually around 8:45/9pm in the summer months. The concept of time for the winter, early spring and late fall days follows the same method starting about an hour to an hour and a half before sunset. Be casual and relaxed, keep in contact on the day of the session and we will be able to do our job by providing you with beautiful family beach portraits.

Not everyday is a beautiful sunny day. Not to worry! Clouds are wonderful for photography. If it rains we can put something down to sit on or we have a variety of standing poses and situations we can put you in to ensure you receive beautiful portraits to take home as memories of your stay. Often it is the familes being together putting the importance on the family documentation more than the location as a background. We set aside an entire afternoon to make sure we are avaiable on days when weather is not ideal. All we ask is that you show the same respect to the importance of family documentation by being available if we call to tell you the weather is not what was expected. This means please do not make dinner reservations or T times on the afternoon of your family beach portrait session.

Avoiding the mid-day sun prevents squinting, harsh and/or black shadows and, of course, the heat which causes sweating and irritability. Since there is no shade on a beach, the entire beach is in direct sunlight and due to the light colored sand, the harsh light bounces up as well as down. The light must be soft or people, especially toddlers, will squint and get cranky quickly. Shooting at a park, with trees in the background and overhead, is a totally different situation. I know a variety of spots close to each beach, from Jacksonville NC to Myrtle beach SC, that make wonderful alternatives for parents who would rather not alter their children's sleep schedules for the sunset beach portrait session times. Whatever the start time, it is very important parents do not let their children run around in the hot sun all day before the session. If children become overly tired and or overly stimulated, it becomes difficult for them to stay still, cooperative and alert, which is frustrating for their parents also. I will give you my best when I am behind the camera in all circumstances. I ask you to please help me make our time together special by coming well rested and ready to have FUN!!!
